Travel sustainably

Travelling sustainability supports a healthy lifestyle and helps reduce air pollution, road congestion and casualties.

The use of a car is sometimes unavoidable but other times realistic sustainable travel options do exist for all sorts of journeys.

Travelling actively and using sustainable transport are great ways to:

  • reduce carbon emissions and air pollution
  • save you money
  • exercise and improve your health
  • reduce congestion on our roads

We encourage Worcestershire residents to consider their travel choices and to look to more sustainable travel options.

Sustainable travel refers to any form of transport that can be classed as green which relies on renewable or regenerated energy. Examples include walking, cycling, wheeling and public transport.

Sustainable travel types

Walking, wheeling and cycling

Walking, Wheeling and Cycling (Active Travel) are simple ways to be more active whilst reducing your carbon footprint and saving money.

Walking or wheeling is the most accessible and affordable method of active travel. Choosing to walk or wheel just one mile to the shop and back once a week rather than drive will see fuel savings of £11 annually and 29kg in CO2 annually.

If you enjoy walking during your leisure time visit:

Cycling is a great method of active travel that is preferred to walking for traveling longer distances. Cycling improves fitness, builds muscle and is linked to improved heart and lung capacity. When travelling in towns and cities cycling can save time by filtering through traffic, avoiding queues.

To plan your next cycling route visit:

Public transport

By choosing public transport over a car, you will reduce your carbon footprint, ease traffic and congestion, and improve the local air quality.

Additionally, it can be a more efficient use of your time, unlike driving a car it enables you to work, read a book, talk on the phone or chat with your fellow riders.

Travelling by bus takes away the stress of parking a car, cheaper than running a car and reduces your carbon footprint.

Rail is the fastest and most reliable (surface) mode of transport. In Worcestershire, most of our larger urban areas have a rail station, which offers a fast and stress-free alternative to driving.

Electric Vehicles

Electric Vehicles (EV) are becoming increasingly popular as drivers find them a cost effective and convenient form of travel. EV's also have no tailpipe emissions so switching to an electric vehicle can reduce your carbon footprint.

Some of the benefits include:

  • improving the air quality in your local area
  • financial savings from reduced fuel and maintenance costs
  • free access to low emission zones

Car share

Car sharing and lift sharing are simple ways to save money.

Particularly popular with commuters, sharing a vehicle can save on your car’s running costs by saving money on repairs, servicing, fuel and road tax.

Not only is car sharing great for saving money, but it also reduces your carbon footprint and the amount of traffic on the road.

Car sharing can be arranged between neighbours, colleagues and friends or can be arranged via apps or online car sharing websites:
