
Registering an animal feed business
Information about registering your business if it sells animal feed.
You may need to register or apply for approval if your business makes, uses, or sells animal feed. This ensures hygiene standards are met across the food chain.
Who needs to register
Register for free if your business:
- imports, manufactures, sells, distributes, transports, or stores feed
- supplies surplus food or co-products as feed
- keeps livestock, farms fish, or grows crops for feed
- is an arable farm growing feed crops
Exemptions
You don't need to register if:
- you're producing feed for personal use, non-food animals, or private consumption
- you sell small quantities to local farms or retailers
- you’re a retailer of pet food (unless you sell horse or rabbit feed)
- the feeding of horses that have been signed out of the food chain in their passport. The passport will be required to complete the exemption process. Please ensure you have it available before starting to complete the form
