February 2023

Work on the new roundabout near Upton-upon-Severn has been completed.

October 2022

The final surfacing of the carriageway will take place between Monday 3 and Tuesday 18 October.

This work will require various road closures to be in place during the night from 7:00pm until 6:00am.

Below is the schedule for the works. Please be aware that timings could change.

  • 3,4,5 October, A38 Tewkesbury Road South and A4104 Pershore Road
  • 6 October, A4104 Pershore Road and roundabout surfacing
  • 7 October, further roundabout surfacing
  • 10 October, A4104 Holly Green surfacing
  • 11 October, A38 Worcester Road surfacing
  • 12 October, A38 Tewkesbury Road surfacing
  • 13 October, A4104 Holly Green lining
  • 14 October, A38 Worcester Road lining
  • 17 October, A38 Worcester Road lining
  • 18 October, Roundabout and A4104 Pershore Road lining

Measures will be in place to minimise disruption as much as possible.

September 2022

Work has continued on the installation of drainage and kerbing on the re-aligned A38 southern carriageways, and footpaths. Works are also ongoing to remove any redundant street lighting. Construction of the attenuation pond and drainage connections has started.

There will be night closures in place on all the approach arms from Monday 3 October for approximately 12 weekday evenings, to undertake final surfacing works.

August 2022

Following the transfer of traffic on to the roundabout, works have continued on the A38 and A4104 to ensure smooth links between the old and new road surfaces. Works are also taking place on the removal of the existing A38 splitter island and the installation of new drainage, streetlighting, kerbing and signage.

Landscaping and final surfacing works will then be undertaken on the roundabout and approaches, with the scheme scheduled for completion this autumn.

July 2022

With traffic now switched onto the new roundabout, works have continued on the A38 north and A4104 west tie-ins, the installation of drainage within verges and street lighting. Tie-in works for the A38 and A4104 will continue under 2-way traffic signals.

From 18 July, works will take place to remove the existing A38 splitter island and to install kerbs to the A4104 Pershore arm. To undertake these works, off-peak and night-time road closures will be required - diversions will be signed and access from other approaches will be maintained.

Works will continue within the site boundary for storm water drainage and the formation of the attenuation ponds. New streetlighting and road signage will also be installed.

29 June 2022

Traffic is now able to travel on the approaches and around part the roundabout, with temporary traffic management in place to allow the remaining works to be undertaken safely. 

The major scheme is being carried out by Worcestershire County Council to replace the previous staggered junction with a new 4-arm roundabout to help reduce congestion in the area.

Traffic to flow on new roundabout near Upton-upon-Severn from next week

The major scheme to reduce congestion at the A38/A4104 junction near Upton-upon-Severn is set to take another step forward next week.

The new 4-arm roundabout, which is being constructed by Worcestershire County Council, to replace the current staggered crossroad junction, will begin to see traffic using it in part from Tuesday 21 June.

Vehicles will be transferred on to part of the new road alignment from 6am in the morning, following the overnight works needed to switch traffic over to the newly constructed carriageways.ths.

Major improvements to relieve congestion near Upton-upon-Severn taking shape

The new road layout, as part of major improvement works to relieve congestion at a busy rural junction near Upton-upon-Severn, is beginning to take shape.

The works have, so far, focused on transferring thousands of tonnes of material on to the site, to create the base for the new roundabout and road alignment, as well as the installation of new drainage and kerbing.

The works are being carried out by Worcestershire County Council to construct a new 4-arm roundabout to replace the current A38/A4104 staggered crossroad junction.

The majority of the works, so far, have taken place off the main public roads, but to allow the scheme to progress, various traffic management phases will be required on both the A38 and A4104 in the coming months.

Iron Age settlement unearthed on site of Upton A38 roundabout works

An Iron Age settlement dating from around 2,250 years ago, was recently discovered on the site of a new roundabout being built near Upton-upon-Severn.

The discovery was made during the planning phase of the improvements being made by Worcestershire County Council to tackle congestion at the A38/A4104 staggered crossroad junction.

The site was first spotted on aerial photos and an initial investigation to find out more was carried out in late 2020. This revealed pottery which indicated that the site was a Middle Iron Age settlement, with an unusually large ditched enclosure at its heart.

Works to start on major improvements to relieve congestion near Upton-upon-Severn

Major improvement works to relieve congestion at a busy rural junction near Upton-upon-Severn are set to get underway next week.

The works being carried out by Worcestershire County Council as part of the ongoing Relieving Congestion Programme aim to tackle the congestion hotspot at the A38/A4104 staggered crossroad junction.

Works will commence on Monday 26 July to construct a new 4-arm roundabout to replace the current staggered junction arrangement, with the western A4104 approach from Upton-upon-Severn being realigned to tie into the roundabout.

Facilities for pedestrians and cyclists will be improved with the provision of crossing locations on all arms of the roundabout and three metre wide shared footway/cycleways.

County Council working with Natural England to obtain Great Crested Newt (GCN) Licence

The County Council is currently working with Natural England to obtain a Great Crested Newt (GCN) Licence which will enable works to start on site.

The work to arrange the GCN Licence is in its final stages and we’re aiming to commence the main construction works in the next couple of months.

Initial works will see the creation of the site compound and access to the compound.

Major improvements to relieve congestion near Upton given the green light

The planning application submitted for major improvement works to relieve congestion at a busy rural junction near Upton has been given the green light to go ahead.

As part of Worcestershire County Council’s ongoing Relieving Congestion Programme, the congestion hotspot at the A38/A4104 staggered crossroad junction will see a big improvement now planning has been approved at the County’s Planning and Regulatory Committee.
