Renewable and low carbon home energy measures

Renewable and low carbon home energy measures

Upgrading to renewable home energy measures and low carbon heating can be costly upfront but used efficiently, can have lower running costs.

Upgrading to renewable home energy measures and low carbon heating can be costly upfront but used efficiently, can have lower running costs, resulting in lower energy bills and a reduction in your carbon footprint.

There are numerous options available for renewable energy measures and low carbon heating, each with benefits and considerations. Examples of measures to consider,

  • Solar PV, generating your own renewable electricity.
  • Solar thermal which are solar hot water heating systems.
  • Air source and ground source heat pumps to heat your home is a lower carbon option.
  • Biomass boilers to heat your home is a lower carbon option.

Worcestershire County Council are aware of the Solar Together Group-Buying Scheme and will be looking into the scheme for 2023. More information to follow 2022/2023.

Grants and funding

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The government is providing grants to encourage homeowners to install low carbon heating systems through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). The grant is being delivered to help homeowners overcome the upfront cost of upgrading and switching to low carbon heating systems. The scheme is open to domestic and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales and will run from 2022 to 2025.

The scheme will provide a grant on the measures below, all of which have an eligibility criterion.

  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump.
  • £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler.
  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump.

0% VAT on qualifying Home Energy Efficient Measures

The Spring Statement 2022 announced the temporary zero-rate VAT on qualifying energy saving materials for 5 years, on or after 1 April 2022 up to and including 31 March 2027. Returning to 5% thereafter.

This will include measures such as solar panels, heat pumps and home insulation. This will positively impact individuals through lower prices charged by energy saving material installers, subject to the degree to which the businesses pass the VAT savings onto their customers.
