In-year applications Frequently Asked Questions

For full details on FAQ's about In-Year applications, see: In-Year applications Frequently Asked Questions (PDF)

Which ages and year groups does in-year include?

In-year refers to any school years, but check the School tier systems page to see which year your child will be in. The law allows parents to state their school preference, but it doesn’t guarantee a choice. Make sure you know the catchment area school for your address, see Find a school. You can apply to other schools, but keep in mind that getting one child into a school doesn’t automatically guarantee a spot for younger siblings. Consider transportation options as well.

How do you apply for an in-year school place?

To apply for an in-year place in Worcestershire, complete the online application and ask your child’s current school to fill out the Education History Form (Word). Some schools may require a supplementary form. You can list up to three preferred schools, but each preference is treated equally.

What special considerations should I make?

Changing schools can affect your child in many ways, so think carefully before making the decision. Discuss any issues with your child’s current school. Moving schools may not always improve a child’s situation, and sometimes it can be more detrimental than helpful.

Why do I need to provide three preferences?

You don't have to use all three, but it's recommended to consider other options in case your top choice isn’t available. If you don’t get a place at your preferred school, you’ll be offered a place at the nearest available school.

What if my child lives outside Worcestershire?

Irrespective of where you live, you still need complete the online application and provide the Education History Form to be completed by your child's current or previous school.

What if my child lives outside the UK and is moving to Worcestershire?

If your child is moving from outside the UK, complete the online application and provide proof of address once you’ve relocated. Contact the School Admissions Team for more info.

My child currently lives outside Worcestershire, but would fall under the category of 'Children of UK Service
Personnel and Other Crown Servants', how would my application differ?

If you’re a UK Service Personnel or Crown Servant, your application will be considered in advance, up to one term before your move. Provide the necessary proof of relocation and address.

Where can I find the Worcestershire in-year scheme?

See, School Admission Policies

How will I know you received my application?

You’ll hear from the School Admissions Team within 10 school days. If no place is available, they’ll let you know how to appeal or offer an alternative school.

How do I apply if my child has an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)?

For EHCP children, contact the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator or SEN casework officer at your current school. These applications aren’t handled by the School Admissions Team.

Who decides on school places?

If a school has more applicants than spaces, they’ll use their admission criteria to select students. The School Admissions Team handles decisions for Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools, while individual governing bodies make decisions for Academies and other schools.

What if I’m moving into a new area?

If you’re moving to a new area, contact local schools or the School Admissions Team early to apply. You’ll need proof of your move. We can’t process your application more than six weeks in advance.

How many children can be admitted to each school?

Each school has a Published Admission Number (PAN) for each year group. This is the maximum number of children they can admit.

How can my child join a waiting list?

If a school is full, you can ask to be put on a waiting list. The list is active, meaning your child's position can change. Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools maintain waiting lists until 31 July, while other schools manage their own lists.
