Supported internships (business)

A supported internship is a type of study programme specifically aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 with a EHCP who wish to move into employment.

What is a supported internship?

A supported internship is a type of study programme specifically aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 with a EHCP (education & health care plan) who wish to move into employment.

Supported internships can bridge the gap between education and the world of work or volunteering. These courses can help you get ahead as you move into adulthood

Supported internships are a great opportunity to improve the life chances of young people with SEND by supporting them into sustained, paid employment.

Achieving paid employment not only brings young people financial independence, but it can be key to:

  • building confidence and self-esteem
  • increasing health and well-being
  • gaining friendships and a social life

How can you support Supported internships?

Within the programme participants rotate around a variety of organisations or departments within a large organisation. For participants to truly understand and experience varied workplaces they need on the ground access to these through local business.

With a wide range of skills and aspirations there are currently limited local business that support these placements. Depending on the participant the placement can last from a few weeks to a few month.

Support and training can be given to local employees wishing to support this agenda and offer a placement to a local participant.

To register your interest or volunteer as a placement for local supported internships please contact inclusiveemployment@worcestershire.gov.uk
