Overview

Bar staff serve drinks in venues like pubs, clubs, wine bars, hotels leisure centres at events like sport matches and music festivals. They serve people with beers, wines, colas and other types of drinks. In some bars they may also serve people with tea, coffee, snacks and meals. Bartenders take people's orders and get their drinks for them. They need to know about different drinks and how to serve them. Many pubs also employ bar helpers who help tidy up and clean tables these roles may be more accessible.

Workplace

This could be anything from pubs, clubs, wine bars, hotels, leisure centres and event locations mainly this is indoors however sometime bar staff can work outside at events and clearing tables outdoors.

Working Hours

Hours vary depending on the organisation. Most of these roles would require, day, evening, weekend and bank holiday working many are part time and hours increase with demand.

Salary

Starting salary: £14,000

Qualifications

You do not need any particular qualifications to become a bartender or bar staff , although some employers may ask you to have a good general standard of education where as some will be more flexible. You can apply directly for bartender roles if you've got some of the relevant skills, experience and knowledge needed for this job. Employers will look for strong communication skills, good customer service, and the ability to work well in a team.

You could also apply for an apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be component enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
