Overview

Builders' merchants sell building and DIY products and materials.

Key Activities
  • Give product information to customers

Workplace

You could work at a builder's yard or at a store.

Your working environment may be physically demanding and outdoors in all weathers.

You may need to wear protective clothing.

Working Hours

Builders' Merchants tend to work between 39 to 41 hours a week. You could work evenings, weekends and bank holidays on shifts. 

Salary

Starting: £16,000

Experienced: £30,000

Qualifications

You could apply directly to work as a builders' merchant.

You may find it useful to have GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including maths and English. Experience in construction, warehousing or retail could be helpful.

 

You could get into this job through a trade supplier intermediate apprenticeship.

This typically takes 12 months to complete as a mix of learning in the workplace and off-the-job study. You'll usually need some GCSEs, usually including English and maths, or equivalent, for an intermediate apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be component enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
