Overview

Social media assistants work closely with the social media manager to create engaging content for a company's social media presence, including keeping social media channels updated and seeking out new social media avenues and ways of connecting with audiences.

  • Check online for company mentions and customer feedback
  • Oversee competitions and campaigns promoting your company
  • Promote social media use within your company
  • Develop strategies to increase your audience
  • Use social media tools to manage multiple sites
  • Use web tracking tools to check how effective your campaigns are
Workplace

As a Social Media Assistant, you could work in an office.

Working Hours

Social Media Assistants tend to work between 38-40 hours a week. You could work evenings and weekends to allow you to attend events or appointments. 

Salary

Starting: £21,000

Experienced: £28,000

 

Qualifications

You can get into this job through a university course or an apprenticeship.

 

Some employers may expect you to have a degree in a relevant subject, like:

  • advertising
  • marketing and public relations
  • digital and social media marketing
  • internet design
  • journalism
  • business management

A degree with a work placement will help you gain valuable experience and may be an advantage when you look for work. You'll usually need 2 to 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree.

 

You could do a digital marketer advanced or degree apprenticeship, or a digital community manager higher apprenticeship. You'll usually need 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and Maths, for an advanced apprenticeship, or 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A levels, or equivalent, for a higher or degree apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
