Bread custards

A great way to use up sliced bread, these custards are so easy to make and are sure to be a winner with all the family. Why not add your favourite fruit to make them extra special.

Ingredients: (Makes 12)

  • 12 slice bread
  • 50g butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 200ml milk, any
  • 1 dsp sugar
  • Small dash vanilla essence

 Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 170°C/325°F/Gas mark 3.
  2. Remove the crusts from the bread and butter both sides. The crusts can be used to make breadcrumbs.
  3. Put the bread slice in a muffin tin to make a basket.
  4. Whisk together the egg, milk, sugar and vanilla essence and pour into the bread case.
  5. Cook for 18-20 minutes until set. Leave for 10 minutes before removing from the tin.

#FoodSavvy tip: For a sweeter custard try adding your favourite fruit or jam before pouring in the custard.
