A Sports Coach teaches sport skills to individuals and teams of all abilities, from children to adults.
- Work with children, adults and professional sports people
- Teach them the correct way to play a number of sports for example - football, cricket, tennis, swimming
- Set up a training programme and instruct on how to use equipment
Sport Coaches can work in leisure centres, gyms, schools, universities, amateur and professional sports clubs, football grounds and stadiums. There are also self-employed coaches that might hire a room or even give private coaching in people’s homes. This job would be working indoors and outdoors dependent on what sport they are teaching. You would be expected to wear a sport type uniform ie tracksuit, shorts and T shirt.
36 to 38 hours per week variable depending on your organisation. You may need to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
Starting salary: £16,000
You could get experience as an assistant sports coach by volunteering for a few hours a week with a club or amateur team. This is a common way to start a coaching career. You’ll usually need a minimum of 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent or a level 2 sports course most employers would ask for Level 3. You could also apply for an apprenticeship.
If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be competent enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
