Overview

A projectionist operates the equipment that shows films in cinemas and/or in television to record and project sound and vision for entertainment or commercial purposes. This type of job would suit someone who is interested in technology. You may be able to start work in a cinema complex as a cinema usher or ticket seller before moving into a projectionist role through internal training.

Key Activities
  • Receiving and checking film reels
  • Loading the films onto the projector in the right order
  • Making sure the film runs smoothly through the projector
  • Adjusting the sound, focus and brightness of the film while it plays if needed
  • Packages the film after it’s been played and store it in a cool, dry area
  • Looks after the equipment and carries out minor repairs where needed
Workplace

A projectionist would usually work alone in a room where the projector equipment is kept. Usually, cinema staff wear a uniform and this may be the same for the projectionist.

Working Hours

On average working 39 to 41 hours a week, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Salary

Starting salary £12,000

Qualifications

You may be able to start work in a cinema complex as a cinema usher or ticket seller before moving into a projectionist role through internal training. You can apply directly to cinemas for a trainee projectionist job. Many employers would ask for 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, and a level 2 course in Media
