Eligibility and fees

Learn about the costs to apply for an Approved Premises Licence and what you need to qualify.

Eligibility criteria

To apply for a licence, the premises must:

  • be a permanent immovable structure with at least one room, or a permanently moored boat or vessel
  • be a respectable and appropriate venue for ceremonies
  • have no current connections with any religion, religious practices, or persuasion
  • meet fire precautions and health and safety regulations
  • have a separate room for interviewing the couple before the ceremony
  • be accessible for disabled people
  • provide parking for the registrars

Permanent Ancillary/Outdoor Structures

These can include garden buildings, summer houses, gazebos, etc. The structure must:

  • be permanent and immovable
  • have a base made of brick, stone, or concrete
  • have a waterproof roof
  • have at least 3 sides that are at least 3 feet high to protect from the weather
  • be at least 4 square meters in size

The licence holder must ensure there is always someone responsible for making sure the premises follows all licence conditions.

Fees

The fees from 1 April 2021, to 31 March 2024, are:

  • 3-year licence: £1,850* 
  • 5-year licence: £3,000
  • 6-year licence: £3,500

*Fees for renewal altered due to COVID-19: 3-year licence - 1/3 off for one renewal only.

A pre-inspection of your premises can be done for £75. This amount will be deducted from your application fee when you submit your completed application
