Petitions for Elected Mayor Referendums

The Council is required, by the Local Government Act 2000 and the Local Authorities (Referendums) (Petitions) (England) Regulations 2011, to publish the minimum number of signatures which would be needed to support a valid petition requiring the Council to hold a referendum on whether or not there should be an Elected Mayor or Committee system for Worcestershire County Council instead of its current Leader and Cabinet system.

The minimum number of signatures (equivalent to 5% of the local government electorate in Worcestershire) is 22,246.

The above number will apply to any petition regularly submitted to the Council before 1 April 2020. However, a new number will be published and the new number will apply from the date it is published. Where that new number is less than the number published in the preceding year, that lesser number will apply to any petition presented to the Council between the date of its publication and 1 April of that year.
