Work due to start on new Shared Use Link at Shrub Hill Quarter

Funded by the UK Government and delivered by Worcestershire County Council in partnership with Worcester City Council, this link will enhance walking and cycling connectivity in the area.

Councillor Karl Perks, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways and Transport at Worcestershire County Council, said: “This is an exciting milestone for the Shrub Hill Quarter regeneration. The new shared use path is a vital link in the City Centre that will make it easier and safer for people to travel around the area on foot or by bike. It’s part of our long-term vision to make Worcester a  more connected city that supports healthier lifestyles and sustainable transport.”

The shared use path will improve access between the City Centre and key destinations such as Worcester Shrub Hill Station, local bus services, and nearby residential and commercial areas. The new route is designed to be safe, accessible, and convenient for both cyclists and pedestrians, encouraging more sustainable travel choices across the city.

Councillor Robyn Norfolk, Chair of the Place and Economic Development Committee at Worcester City Council, said: "The regeneration of the Shrub Hill Quarter will create new homes, jobs and leisure destinations, so it’s important that there are quick and easy ways of getting between that area and the city centre.
"Once completed this new shared route for walkers, cyclists and other forms of active travel will be a significant contribution to the aims of the City Council's Environmental Sustainability Strategy."

The first stage will be works to improve the junction and widen the footway where Cromwell Street meets Shrub Hill Road, scheduled to start week commencing 16 June.

Worcestershire County Council is working in partnership with Worcester City Council, who secured £10million Towns Fund for the regeneration of Shrub Hill Quarter.

The Shared Use link will follow the line of Cromwell St from Shrub Hill Road over the canal to Pheasant Street, opposite the Asda car park. It will provide a new pedestrian and cycle connection between Shrub Hill Railway Station and the city centre.

While this marks the beginning of work on the shared use link, it forms just one part of the larger regeneration plans for the Shrub Hill area, which aim to revitalise and modernise a key gateway to Worcester.
