More than 750 runners and their families gathered at Wythall Park last weekend for the Wythall and Hollywood Fun Run and some international GB athletes turned up to cheer everyone on.
People of all ages took part in a 5K or 10K race, or team up with friends and family for the Families on Track 5K relay. For those not running, the event had plenty of entertainment to enjoy in-between cheering on the participants.
There was also the chance to try a range of sports, including tennis, bowls and archery. In addition, there were adapted versions of tennis designed for people with sight loss, offering everyone the opportunity to experience these sports in an inclusive and accessible way.
After a scorching week, a slight drop in temperature and showers kept participants cool and inspired many to achieve personal bests.
Cllr Doctor Satinder Bell, Cabinet Member for Health and Community Support said: “This type of event is exactly what health and community is all about. It’s people coming together and having fun. It didn’t matter whether you were first or last across the finish line – you were there. Everyone who ran did amazing! A huge thank you to our sponsors David Lloyd Clubs Solihull Cranmore and Bromsgrove, Acorns Children’s Hospice and Optima for helping make this grassroots event even more special with their support.”
Sue Baxter, Chair of the Wythall Community Association, said: “This fun run reflects the incredible spirit of our community, bringing people of all ages and abilities together. It’s a true celebration of everything that makes Wythall and Hollywood special. As a charity, Wythall Park relies on the hard work and dedication of volunteers to make events like this happen, and we’re very proud of what this event has become. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who give their time and energy to support our community.”
Worcestershire County Council’s Public Health team helped support local gym Rush Active to run a Couch to 5K programme at Woodrush Sports Centre, with several graduates from 2024 returning to take part in this year’s race.
Sophie Boreham, Events Manager at Acorns, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to be part of such a fantastic day and see so many people lace up their running shoes for this year’s Wythall and Hollywood Fun Run in aid of Acorns! The atmosphere was nothing short of electric, and it was especially moving to hear the cheers for #TeamAcorns runners, who were all proudly sporting their colourful Acorns vests – you couldn’t miss them!
“Every penny raised as a result of their incredible efforts will help us continue our care for seriously ill children when they need us most. This generosity means the world to us and the children and families we support. A heartfelt thank you – and a huge well done!”
Torg Bilgimer, General Manager for David Lloyd Clubs Bromsgrove, added: "We’re delighted to have sponsored this wonderful event. We were proud to donate prizes for the top three places in each race and to fill the goodie bags. It’s not just those first across the line who deserve to be celebrated, every person who takes part deserves a huge well done. Staying active is at the heart of what we do, so seeing people of all ages and abilities come together in such a fun and welcoming environment was inspiring.”
Local charity Sensory Matters Worcestershire (formerly Sight Concern Worcestershire) provided an accessible support zone for visually impaired attendees.
World Champion and Olympic medallist Steve Cram, who runs Events of the North, said: “What an absolutely phenomenal day with an incredible atmosphere! It felt like a true celebration of community, sport, and fun. The energy, the enthusiasm, and the support shown throughout the day really captured the heart and spirit of this race. We’re incredibly proud to be part of it.”
Other elite athletes attending the event included 400m silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games, Allison Curbishley who also leads the Events of the North team. Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir and 2011 World Championship silver medallist Hannah England were on hand to cheer the runners on, adding to the electric atmosphere throughout the day.
The fun run was organised by Wythall Community Association, with support from Worcestershire County Council and Events of the North.
The Wythall and Hollywood Fun Run continues to build a strong legacy of fitness, fun, and fundraising — a testament to the strength and warmth of the local community.
