Church Green West in Redditch

The next phase of improvements is about to start to make Redditch town centre a more attractive place for visitors and help boost trade for shops and businesses.

Existing utility services such as water, telecommunication and electricity supplies are being diverted over the next six months to enable the improvements on Unicorn Hill, Church Green West, and St Stephen’s Churchyard to commence in earnest in the 2024 summertime.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Economy, and Skills said:

‘It’s essential to divert the existing utilities infrastructure ahead of the main improvement works starting on site. The scheme will enable us to enhance parts of the town centre for all users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.

Whilst residents and local businesses may notice a small amount of disruption, this work is essential to help set the foundations of this exciting project.”

Redditch Borough Council Leader Matt Dormer added: “In October we saw the NHS sign a lease to take up space in the Town Hall as part of plans to create a community hub to put partner services under one roof making it more accessible for residents. So, I am delighted to see, just a couple of weeks later, these improvement works taking place so the next phase of the wider programme to regenerate Redditch can move forward.

“The fact we are undertaking major changes like diverting utility supplies shows that we mean business and I am excited to see our residents and businesses reap the benefits which they deserve, from this investment.

Things are moving quickly thanks to partnership working which once again demonstrates, we are stronger together.”

Worcestershire County Council is working in partnership with Redditch Borough Council on improving the public space. It will be the third phase of public space improvements for the town centre following-on from works on Alcester Street and Market Place and will be designed to tie in with plans to develop Redditch Railway Station.

Improvement works were completed in Market Place in May 2021 and in Alcester Street in 2020.

Both schemes included a number of measures including resurfacing the pavements and roads, improving drainage and the installation of new street furniture e.g., bins, seats, and planters.

The project is being funded from Towns Deal funding provided by the UK Government as part of a wider programme of works to help regenerate the town centre.
