Worcestershire has welcomed the extension of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative to give people the opportunity to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen’s Green Canopy was due to conclude in December signifying the end of the Jubilee year. However, it will now be extended to include the full tree planting season which begins in October 2022 and comes to an end in March 2023.

Communities across the county have already planted nearly 50,000 trees in celebration of Her Majesty reaching her Platinum Jubilee, and to honour her remarkable reign.

The interactive map created by The Queen’s Green Canopy project will continue until the end of March 2023. This will showcase the planting projects across the whole of the United Kingdom. This will give people an opportunity to register their projects and participate in this special legacy.

Georgina Britten-Long, Deputy Lieutenant for Worcestershire said: “The Queen’s Green Canopy project will be a lasting legacy across the country and a perfectly poignant tribute to Her Majesty The Queen, the work she did and the causes she championed during her 70 year reign. The people of Worcestershire have really embraced this project and this extension allows us to build on the number of new trees and new woodland across the county which is great news.”

Worcestershire was honoured to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to Worcester in October 2021 when she launched the initiative and planted an Acer 'Autumn Blaze' tree at St Barnabas school in Worcester.

Following on from the county launch of the project, Worcestershire schools took full advantage of the Woodland Trust, and the I DIG TREES project’s Free Trees for Schools and Communities Schemes - both schemes are still available.

From a single tree to a copse or a wood, an avenue or a group of fruit trees, there are many ways to get involved with the Queen’s Green Canopy:

  • plant trees in your garden or on your land
  • involve your employees in a tree planting project
  • plant a Platinum school tree
  • develop Local projects for parishes, Residents’ Associations and youth groups
  • plant large trees in cities, estates, and new housing developments
  • donate to help others plant - Worcestershire tree fund
