Worcestershire Archives marks South Asian Heritage month

The event will take place on Monday 2 August from 8pm to 9pm and is inspired for individuals who would like to learn further about South Asian history.



South Asian Heritage Month runs from 18 July to 17 August every year with the aims to raise the profile of British South Asian heritage and history in the UK through education, arts, culture and commemoration.

It also allows people to look to the past to understand how Britain became the diverse country it is today.



South Asia is formed of 8 countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.



The British South Asian community currently stands at over 3 million people, with at least one out of every 20 people in the country having South Asian heritage.



Zoe van Well, Archivist at Worcestershire Archives said: “We’re really excited about our upcoming online events for South Asian Heritage month as we can’t wait to speak to people about the records we have.



“We’re also encouraging those who are from South Asian heritage to tell us their thoughts on how we can increase diversity in the archives and also add any records of their own that they might have.”

Residents in the county will have the chance to explore items in the collections including Palfrey collection books and Whinfield collection glass lantern slides.

The event will also give the opportunity for people to collaborate with the Archives team in a bid to represent South Asian heritage and culture in the archives.
