Worcestershire Children First would like to hear from parents, carers, children and young people as we have reviewed our current approach to Medical Education provision and have new proposals to make about changes in the future.

On March 18 2021, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet approved the recommended approach to delivering statutory Medical Education provision in Worcestershire.

The Medical Education Team provides a service for children who are unable to attend school because of medical difficulties. This is currently offered at 3 bases in the county, Kidderminster Worcester and Redditch, and in some cases is provided through home tuition.

Current changes being proposed would broaden the support for schools when pupils' need additional support to help them when they are too unwell to attend their home school.

Councillor Marcus Hart, Cabinet Member for Education said: “The purpose of the review was to ensure we continue to improve the current service that we provide for children and young people in Worcestershire who are unable to attend school because of their medical needs.

“We have taken the opportunity to work with parents and carers, young people, teaching staff, schools and medical professionals over the last year to look at the impact our current medical education provision has for all involved and look at the key differences the proposed changes would make. Any changes to support that is currently offered in this area will be made carefully with the current services that operate for pupils needing a short-term safe, nurturing and therapeutic environment for their education, as a response to an acute phase of medical need.”

The changes would see Medical Education provision registered with OFSTED and delivered by a commissioned provider .

It would also see pupil-led funding follow children while they are attending medical education provision and make any necessary changes to where children receive this support.

This latest review follows engagement and review activities between January and September last year with stakeholders.

The consultation will run for 6 weeks to midday on Tuesday 6 July and would welcome your comments via the dedicated School Consultation pages of the County Council website.
