Refurbished light columns and lanterns to be refitted on city bridge

Worcestershire County Council will reinstall the columns and their lanterns which were removed from the eastern (Cathedral) side of the bridge earlier this year. Once they are back in place, Western Power will reconnect them later in the week.

Following these works, the final eight columns and the remaining lanterns on the western (Pitchcroft) side of the bridge will be removed for refurbishment. 

Councillor Mike Rouse, cabinet member for highways and transport at Worcestershire County Council said, “It’s great that were now in a position to put these lights back on the bridge, where they belong.

“I am looking forward to seeing all 16 columns and 32 lanterns fully restored to their former glory. They are an asset to Worcester’s heritage and contribute hugely to the style and age of the area. I would like to thank everybody who has been involved in this challenging restoration.”

To allow the works to take place, there will be a lane closure on the bridge, towards St John’s on each day of the works, potentially to include Tuesday 12 July also, between 9:30am and 3pm.

The lanterns, dating back to the 1930s, have deteriorated following decades of exposure to river flooding conditions, as well as suffering corrosion and general wear and tear.  It is expected that they will all be reinstated by late Autumn 2022.
