A full set of beautifully crafted heritage lanterns will be installed on Stourport Bridge beginning Monday, 11 August, restoring the historic charm of this iconic local landmark.
Worcestershire County Council will oversee the works, which include repainting existing lamp columns and installing 18 new lanterns, six on the bridge itself and six on either side along the approach roads. The new lanterns replace the original Grade II listed fittings, which were removed in 2024 due to significant deterioration. Temporary lighting has been in place since their removal, while the heritage-style replacements were carefully manufactured.
Councillor Karl Perks, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways and Transport, said:
“Stourport Bridge is one of the district’s most cherished structures, and these new lanterns honour that legacy while bringing our lighting standards up to date. This is a great example of how we can protect our heritage and meet modern-day expectations. We’re grateful to residents for their patience - it will be worth it.”
Works will commence at the Astley end of the bridge and progress towards Stourport. Installation will be carried out under temporary traffic lights, starting with three-way lights for approximately two days. This will then switch to two-way lights as work moves along the bridge, with the entire operation expected to take around a week to complete, weather permitting.
To minimise disruption, traffic lights will be manually controlled and restricted to off-peak hours between 9:30am and 3:30pm daily.
The new lanterns have been produced by the original manufacturer to ensure authenticity and meticulous attention to detail. They incorporate modern LED optics for improved energy efficiency, frosted rear panels to meet local ecology guidelines, and reinforced spigots (the component connecting the lantern to the column) for enhanced durability.
