This Positive Ageing Week we are shining a spotlight on the importance of staying physically and socially active as we get older.
Residents in Pershore say they ‘feel young again’ thanks to inclusive sports and physical activity sessions delivered in the heart of their community.
With support from a Worcestershire County Council Public Health community wellbeing grant, Freedom Activities, have been able to expand their sessions; offering safe, welcoming spaces where people of all ages and abilities can take part in activities that support both physical and mental wellbeing.
Freedom Activities is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a variety of recreational sports and games for participants of all ages.
Their current sessions include:
- walking netball
- walking football
- Boccia
- “Young At Heart” exercise classes
Participants report feeling healthier, more confident, and less isolated, with many attendees forming lasting friendships and rediscovering a sense of belonging.
Mike, diagnosed with Parkinsons, explained how the walking football group helps him: “It has been a lifesaver for me, suddenly I met 20 guys in the same boat as me. We all help each other and have a great time together.”
Neil, another regular walking football attendee said: “It takes you back, makes you feel young again, like the old days.”
Dr Lisa McNally, Director of Public Health at Worcestershire County Council, said: “Across Worcestershire, there’s a growing need for opportunities that help people stay socially and physically active, especially those who face barriers to participation due to age, ability, or isolation. Our Public Health Community Grant programme helps us to give communities across the county the support they need to set up amazing and life-changing initiatives like this one. We are so proud of our grant programme and Freedom Activities CIC is a shining example of how targeted support can unlock potential, reduce health inequalities, and build stronger, more connected communities.”
