Worcestershire County Council and partners ADL Smartcare are launching the Worcestershire LifeCurve™ this week.

It’s a new website and mobile app to help people in Worcestershire find out how well they are ageing, and whether they are losing the ability to do everyday tasks.

People can quickly login or download the app to discover where they are on their personal ageing journey and what they can do about it, with the aim of staying independent for longer. They are recommended to make a few small daily lifestyle changes and offered simple exercises. This is based on a local pilot which saw many people regain the ability to do these daily tasks and increase their mobility. This meant they were able to stay independent for longer.

The LifeCurve™ Worcestershire is easy to sign up to and asks users to take a quick self-assessment.  It then offers users locally tailored information on their current wellbeing, access to local resources and advice on staying active.

The LifeCurve™ was developed by ADL Smartcare and is based on research by Newcastle University. This research found people age and lose the ability to do certain daily tasks in the same order. For example, as we get older, day to day tasks such as cutting toenails become more difficult.

The Living Well in Later Life pages of the County Council website is part of the County Council’s project Living Well Later In Life Worcestershire, which encourages and celebrates positive ageing.

Dr Kathryn Cobain, Director of Public Health said: “We all know that keeping active has a positive effect on our physical and mental wellbeing. It is also a significant factor in helping to protect us against illness as we get older. Now, with the help of the LifeCurve™, we are able to pinpoint where people are in their ageing journey and help them access the advice and support they need to continue to live healthier and more independent lives."

Councillor Karen May, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing added: “Being supported to live well and stay healthy is particularly important as we get older. With help from the LifeCurve™ we can all access health and wellbeing advice and take practical steps to living longer, healthier and happier lives.

“Enabling people to have healthy and independent later lives is a key priority for Worcestershire County Council. The LifeCurveTM has been shown to positively affect the lives of older people, keeping them more active and independent at home for longer. This in turn reducing the need for additional personal care and will ease the pressure for health and adult social care services.”
