This summer, Worcestershire’s libraries and National Trust Croome are teaming up to offer families an unforgettable experience of reading, creativity, and outdoor play, with an exciting programme of Summer Reading Challenge events and the National Trust’s Summer of Play.
From 18 to 22 August, the enchanting grounds of Croome will transform into a story-filled wonderland as part of the Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme, “Story Garden,” comes alive with library staff bringing nature-inspired Storytimes to spark imagination, set against the breathtaking backdrop of one of Worcestershire’s most beautiful heritage sites. Plus, don’t miss your chance to meet the lovable Bookstart Bear!
Councillor Ian Cresswell, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Environment and Communities at Worcestershire County Council said: “This partnership shows how libraries and heritage sites can come together to inspire the next generation. These free family activities spark imagination, build confidence, and foster a love of reading and the environment.”
Children aged 4–11 can join this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at their local library from 5 July. After reading four books, children will receive a special free entry pass to Croome for themselves and one accompanying adult! Complete all six books to earn a medal and certificate.
All Summer Reading Challenge sessions and events are free to attend. Please note, normal admission charges apply at Croome for visitors who do not qualify for the free entry pass.
Before the Summer Reading Challenge, the National Trust’s "Summer of Play" returns with a pop-up event at the Hive, Worcester on 28 June from 11am to 3pm, focusing on bugs and biodiversity with themed games and creative activities. A second pop-up session will be held at The Hive on 12 July. Activities include nature-inspired crafts, interactive games like “Hook-a-Bug,” and collaborative art projects celebrating the "Story Garden" theme.
Jenine McGaughran, Creative Producer for National Trust, South Worcestershire added: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Worcestershire libraries on the Summer Reading Challenge as part of the National Trust’s Summer of Play at Croome. Central to this collaboration is inspiring young visitors to explore natural worlds through play and literacy by inviting curiosity and creativity.”
