Walking and cycling routes in Bromsgrove could get a boost if plans to progress a replacement bridge are given the green light.

Worcestershire County Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee will meet on 24 May to vote on proposals to build a modern standard, multi-million-pound bridge over the A38, linking Carnforth Road to the east of the A38 to Fordhouse Road to the west of the A38, replacing the existing outdated structure.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, said: “The bridge would be a significant step forward in our commitment to providing improved walking and cycling infrastructure in Bromsgrove.

“We’ve already made an impressive start on improving this corridor and, if approved, the additional footbridge would go a long way to enhancing connectivity within the town.”

The pedestrian and cycle bridge forms part of Phase 3 of Worcestershire County Council’s A38 Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme (A38 BREP), which aims to support all road users within the corridor.

The bridge has been designed to provide safe and secure crossings on the A38, promoting walking and cycling within the area, replacing an existing bridge that despite being on a national cycle route, cyclists are required to dismount to cross due to current safety issues. This will build upon the recent successful delivery of a comprehensive network of walking and cycling routes across the town, linking residential areas, employment sites, schools, the hospital, the town centre and the railway station.
