Another busy year of major infrastructure and highways works

2021 has proved to be another busy year, with many major milestones being achieved and 2022 looks set to be no different.



Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen bridges being lifted into place and opened, new roads constructed, and the refurbishment of town centres across the county.

Councillor Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: "It’s not been an easy year, so it’s particularly pleasing to see some of the great progress that we’ve made on our major infrastructure projects and the improvements that we’ve made on the county’s highways.

“We’ve achieved some real milestones in 2021 and I look forward to us achieving many more over the next 12 months.

“Thank you to everyone involved in these important projects, for your hard work and dedication, keep up the good work.”

Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and flooding, 2021 saw several key milestones achieved.

In January, Sabrina Bridge in Worcester reopened following works to install the new main span of the bridge, which had been removed as part of the bridge’s major refurbishment, the improvements to transport links in the Churchfields area of Kidderminster were completed, and works started to help reduce congestion at Hoobrook Junction in Kidderminster.

In February, works got underway on Market Place in Redditch, which included repaving and drainage works, as part of the Town Centre Improvement Programme.

In March, works were completed on the improvements to St John’s in Worcester, as part of the Relieving Congestion Programme. Works included the installation of a formal controlled crossing at the junction of The Bullring and the traffic signals at New Road/Tybridge Street.

In May, works on Market Place, Redditch were completed, traffic flowed over the new section of Carrington Bridge, Worcester for the first time and works started on Port Street in Evesham, which included repaving works, upgraded traffic signals, and the reconfiguration of the Waterside/Port Street Junction, as part of the Town Centre Improvement Programme.

In July, works got underway on the A4104/A38 Junction near Upton-upon-Severn, a new trial ‘On Demand’ bus service launched in Bromsgrove and the Broomhall Way Footbridge, part of the A4440 Southern Link Road works, opened.

In October, the town centre improvement works on Port Street, Evesham were completed.

In November, the new road layout at Hoobrook Junction in Kidderminster became operational and Storm Arwen brought an extremely busy weekend for the Council’s highways teams in order to keep the county moving.
