Gill Deakin - Learning and Teaching Adviser: Early Years

Experience and area of expertise

For the last 31 years you will have found Gill somewhere within the teaching profession in Worcestershire. Gill has taken the journey from teacher, to deputy to being a headteacher and then into the role as a Learning and Teaching Adviser for Early Years in 2006, 0-5 years (that includes Year 1). Gill has also had various temporary leadership roles in schools since then which she says "keeps me ‘real’ and up to date with the whole school picture as education around the child evolves!"

Gill genuinely feels it is fantastic to be able to work alongside Early Years practitioners and of course the children they work and play with every day.

"We are a different breed! We see and experience the uniqueness of each child and each family. Much of my time is spent using my creative juices to inspire all adults involved in the care and education of our very young children in developing exciting and stimulating learning environments both inside and outside so that they can achieve the best possible outcomes. I also enjoy embracing the challenge of thinking about new and innovative ways to meet the changing needs of every child, of creating provision that every child feels they just have to explore and be curious about and of course, thinking of 101 things you could do with a peg, a palette or even a car number plate!

I advise, I support, I challenge, I moderate, I share, I question, I play and I enjoy!"

Training Gill can deliver:

  • outdoor learning environments
  • reading, writing and numbers in reception
  • observations of learning
  • new to teaching reception
  • play-based learning
