Consultation on the draft Graduated Response within Worcestershire

Where a pupil is identified as having Special Educational Needs, educational establishments should take action to remove barriers to learning and put effective special educational provision in place. This is called SEN support and should take the form of a four-part cycle through which earlier decisions and actions are revisited, refined and revised with a growing understanding of the pupil’s needs and of what support the pupil needs to secure good progress and good outcomes. This is known as the Graduated Response.

Part of the SEND Improvement plan work includes developing the understanding and implementation of the Graduated Response to meet Special Educational Needs.  The Graduated Response document is intended to be used as a tool for schools and settings and those partner agencies working with them. It is also intended to be an information source for parents, carers and young people to inform and guide in relation to the education of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

We recently asked SEND professionals, parent / carers and young people to provide feedback on the draft new Graduated Response guidance document. The consultation closed on 1 March 2019. Since then the Local Area has been working to respond to the consultation feedback and further improve the guidance. We will also be producing a parent / carer friendly version working with representatives to ensure this is co-produced.
