Waste Core Strategy

How we plan for waste management facilities in Worcestershire.

Waste Core Strategy Local Plan

The Waste Core Strategy Local Plan sets out how we plan for waste management facilities in Worcestershire until 2027.

It was adopted on 15 November 2012 and is part of the development plan.

It is used by the County Council to make decisions about planning applications for waste management facilities. City, Borough and District Councils in Worcestershire also use it to make decisions about other types of planning applications that could have waste implications.

The Strategy guides developers as to what type of development will be acceptable where and encourages and stimulates businesses involved in recycling and re-use of resources.

A Web Tool has been developed to support Policy WCS 16 (New development proposed on or near to existing waste management facilities). It maps all known waste sites in the county with a 250m buffer.

The Waste Core Strategy was subject to Sustainability Appraisal and Habitats Regulations Assessment

The purpose of Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is to appraise the social, environmental and economic effects of the Waste Core Strategy. The SA of the Waste Core Strategy also incorporated the requirements of the Strategic Environmental Assessment. Appraisal was undertaken at each stage in the development of the Waste Core Strategy.

A consolidated SA report (PDF) accompanied the final published Waste Core Strategy as part of the formal adoption procedures. A post-adoption SA statement (PDF) was also issued.

Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) was carried out alongside the development of the Waste Core Strategy to determine whether the Strategy would have any likely significant effects on the integrity of any European-designated sites.

If you would like any further information about the Sustainability Appraisal or Habitat Regulations Assessment of the Waste Core Strategy, or wish to view any of the appraisal/assessment documents from earlier stages, please contact us:
