Make shopping closer to home your New Year resolution for 2021

Published Thursday, 31st December 2020

It’s the time of year for making New Year resolutions ahead of 2021, so why not think about shopping closer to home more often next year?

It has been estimated that if every household in the county spent just £10 with Worcestershire businesses, the local economy could be boosted by around £2.5m over the festive season.

As well as the direct £2.5m boost, it was also estimated that for every £1 spent with local businesses, around £1.60 goes back into the area’s economy.

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for the Economy and Infrastructure, said: “We are incredibly proud of the resilience shown by Worcestershire businesses in recent months, many of which still require support from local communities to ensure their future.

“With this in mind, I would urge all residents to show their support and shop locally where possible.”

Worcestershire County Council is encouraging residents to continue shopping locally as we enter a new year.

Following a challenging financial period and a crucial festive season, many small businesses within the county are still relying on local community support to keep them afloat.

Many local businesses have adapted their services to offer delivery and postage options, meaning Worcestershire residents can continue to support independent businesses safely without having to leave their homes.

In Worcestershire, 99.7% of business are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Worcestershire County Council is also continuing to support local businesses with the Here2Help Business Programme, which was set up in response to the pandemic to help businesses recover, adapt and develop.

As part of this, the Adapt Programme offers free one-to-one business advice sessions with expert advisors in the three critical areas of business planning and  finance, technology, and marketing and digital communications. All businesses in Worcestershire can receive up to three hours of specialist support.

Eligible Worcestershire businesses looking to address more complex longer-term considerations may also receive up to six days bespoke consultancy support in key specialist areas, delivered remotely via Zoom.
