Coronavirus (COVID-19) What is a contact?

A ‘contact’ is a person who has been close to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 anytime from two days before the person was symptomatic up to ten days from onset of symptoms (this is when they are infectious to others).

To be classed as a contact the individual must have breached the contact definition with a positive case during their infectious period. 

The contact definition is:

  • less than 2 metres for 15 minutes or more
  • less than 1 metre for 1 minute or more
  • face to face for any time at all
