Assistant Director Recruitment
Foreword by Paula Furnival, Strategic Director for People
At Worcestershire County Council, our residents want to live healthy and long lives have a good quality of life and remain independent in their own homes and communities.
To make this vision a reality, our People Directorate – comprising Adult Social Care, Communities, commissioning of Children’s’ Services and Public Health – is transforming and collaboratively shaping both services and the market to deliver a person-centred approach to our offer. It’s all part of enabling Worcestershire to be a great place to live, work and do business.
I’m delighted to announce that we are now recruiting for two new Chief Officers here at Worcestershire County Council - Assistant Director for Adult Social Care and Assistant Director for People Commissioning.
The Assistant Director for Adult Social Care will use their expertise where it can make a real difference, and will be the main social care professional for the council. They will take operational responsibility for a number of areas within Adult Social Care, including the social work teams. At the same time, they will work strategically across the health and social care system to design and lead the provision of high-quality, accessible support and services that promote independence, wellbeing and choice. Innovation is key as we face the challenge of developing sustainable and transformational improvements with a challenging budget.
The Assistant Director for People Commissioning will lead the commissioning of high-quality, accessible support and services. They will lead the operational management of the commissioning team. At the same time, they will work with corporate colleagues, system partners and providers to ensure a whole-life approach to health and social care: embracing technology, managing the market and maximising opportunities to join up services and partners.
For both roles, we are looking for individuals with an ability to inspire, influence and challenge alongside key leaders and decision-makers across the council, its partners and other stakeholders.
Successful candidates will discover the County Council provides the ideal environment for self-starters who are eager to rethink what Local Government can be and ‘do things you want to do rather than things you have to do.’
Worcestershire is a fantastic place to live and work, we have a great natural environment, good schools and great connectivity.
What I’d say to candidates is it’s a chance to make things better by working in a cohesive way. There will be opportunities for change and to do things you have always wanted to do and as newly forming Integrated Care System, this is the place to make your mark.

Successful candidates for both roles will discover the County Council provides the ideal environment for self-starters who are eager to rethink what local government can be and do things you want to do, rather than things you have to do.
Worcestershire is a fantastic place to live and work, we have a great natural environment, good schools and great connectivity. Although we have issues and problems to solve, no single thing is over-dominant or overwhelming like it can be in some places.
What I’d say to candidates is this is a chance to join a relatively new management team that’s fundamentally about making things better by working in a cohesive way. There will be opportunities for change and to do things you have always wanted to do in local government.
