Child Protection Chair and Independent Reviewing Officer

Purpose of role

The primary focus is to quality assure the care planning and review process for each child and to ensure that his/her current wishes and feelings are given full consideration.

The Independent Reviewing Officer has a crucial role to play in ensuring that the local authority fulfils its responsibilities as a 'corporate parent' for all the children that it looks after.

The Child Protection Chair is an independent person from case management and has the responsibility for making sure that all who attend Child Protection Conferences (including children and families) can participate, information is shared appropriately, decisions are made as required and that the process is accurately recorded.

To attain this role you will

  • have significant experience at Team Manager level
  • hold a BA/BSc/MA in Social Work (or equivalent)
  • be Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered
  • have experience of working directly with children

Key knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful in this role

  • to be able to take professional responsibility for the provision of a high quality service
  • to show a professional authoritative confidence in autonomous working and decision making
  • to demonstrate a strong knowledge of Child Protection and/or Looked after Child processes and to be able to audit the quality of practice
  • to show strong demonstration of, response to and use of the escalation process and complaints and dispute resolution process 
  • to be able to promote and raise up to date expectations about practice norms, identifying and helping resolve poor practice issues
  • to act as an independent professional for a child subject to either a Child Protection Plan or Looked after Child Care Plan
  • ability and skill in chairing complex meeting with multi-professionals
  • ability to work with families in difficult and stressful situations and to bring the voice of the child through into their work
  • to encourage service users, carers and significant others, to contribute to every aspect of the decision making processes, to ensure that wherever possible, individuals are enabled to make decisions about their own lives
