Carer awareness e-learning

On this page you will find information on the free Carer awareness e-learning courses we offer and why you should do the courses.

Worcestershire County Council are pleased to launch the Adult and Young People Carer Awareness e-learning courses. This is part of the Councils ‘Carers Offer’ to support carers and so everyone can become carer aware.

You may not know but:

  • 3 in 5 people become carers at some stage of their lives
  • many must juggle their caring role with a job
  • 1 in 7 members of the workforce is a working carer
  • there are nearly 64,000 Carers in Worcestershire

It is everyone’s responsibility to be ‘Carer Aware’. This means understanding what a Carer is and how caring for someone may affect the Carer. We may be a Carer ourselves, know someone who is a Carer or will come across Carers in our everyday lives at work or at home. Therefore, we need to know how to identify if someone is a Carer; sometimes Carers don’t recognise themselves as a Carer, they just think that is their role in the family or as a friend or good neighbour.

However, Carers need to be:

  • recognised and valued
  • need a life of their own
  • need support with their mental and physical wellbeing

Some carers may struggle to balance their caring role and the rest of their life so need additional support.

If we know what a carer is then we can let them know they are not on their own and be able to signpost a carer to support that is available.

The role of Carers has never been more poignant as it is now during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are more Carers than ever and the pressures on Carers is increasing with COVID-19 regulations and restrictions affecting how we live our lives. In our response to COVID-19 we offer support to Carers at every opportunity, to enable Carers to continue their valuable role to support the person they cared for where they wish to and where this is safe and appropriate to do so.
