With the choice, control, and flexibility a direct payment offers, it can be used for recommended daily living equipment or assistive technology, assistive technology is any device, system or equipment designed to assist you with everyday activities. They are intended to support you to stay safe and independent in your own home for as long as possible.
In our initial conversation with you, we will look at what needs you have and work with our technology provider to source the latest technology (as this a continually evolving market) to ensure your needs are met. We use technology as it’s a good way of preventing your needs increasing, keeps you at home longer, reassurance for your carers and family and for some people this is a less intrusive option.
Instead of being provided with equipment, you will be able to purchase the equipment required with a direct payment. The council must be satisfied that the equipment meets the assessed needs and outcomes adequately.
Agreement for a piece of equipment may be included in your weekly direct payment (ongoing costs) or agreed as a separate one-off payment e.g. installation fee.
There is the added advantage you may wish to purchase equipment from a different supplier to the one that the council uses, If you have chosen more expensive products than the amount the council has agreed to fund, you must make arrangements with your service provider about how you will pay the additional amount due directly.
Equipment purchased by a direct payment will belong to you and therefore you will be responsible for its care and maintenance. Insurance policies, warranties, invoices, and receipts must be retained as will need to be provided for review purposes.
Additional cost for items that require regular servicing or maintenance will need to be built into the value of your direct payment. When the equipment is no longer useful to the you, it is your responsibility to dispose of it, though it may be possible for the council to arrange for it to be collected. The council will not buy the equipment from you.
Any pendant alarms purchased will be linked to a monitoring & response centre that provides 24/7 support.
The direct payment cannot be used to purchase items that would normally be provided by others such as the NHS or housing.
