Worcestershire County Council’s Trading Standards team is warning residents about a new scam where cold callers pretend to be helping people claim the Government’s £150 energy rebate.
The Local Government Association has now warned councils that it has become apparent that criminals are cold calling residents asking for bank details in order for them to receive the Government’s energy rebate.

Council Tax Energy Bill Rebate 2022
The Government has announced a council tax rebate which will provide a one-off payment of £150 to households living in council tax bands A to D. Payments will be made from April 2022 and will not need to be paid back. This is part of a targeted response to rising energy bills and will mean that council tax costs will not rise for many people including those on the lowest incomes.
Who is eligible?
Households are eligible if (on 1 April 2022), they are liable for council tax on a property in council tax bands A to D, and which they live in as their main home. This includes those who receive local council tax support, even if your annual council tax bill is below £150.
You can check your council tax band via the Government Council Tax Bands page.
How you will receive the £150 Council Tax Rebate payment
Please be aware of potential fraudsters contacting you via telephone and email attempting to gain your bank account details.
If you are eligible and pay your council tax by direct debit, your local council will make the payment directly to the bank account they have on record, starting from April 2022.
If you do not pay your council tax by direct debit, your local council will contact you to arrange a method of paying you the rebate i.e., Post Office voucher. Details on how your local councils may contact you or issue the payment be found on their district council websites. Links below,
