Attendance support to help pupils back to school

Published: Wednesday, 10th March 2021

As many pupils return to school its worth revisiting attendance procedures and plans

DfE schoold coronavirus (COVID-19) operational attendance guidance February 2021 (opens in a new window).

As schools plan for the expansion of the number of pupils on site it is worth revisiting your school attendance action plan to ensure it is in line with current guidance and is robust in highlighting any attendance issues.
All schools will need to proactively plan resources to support attendance and staff will need to have a shared understanding and responsibility of how to deal with any attendance matters as they arise.
The action plan should include

  • How you will effectively communicate the school's expectations and procedures around attendance to all pupils, parents and carers
  • How you will proactively encourage pupils to return to school and reassure parents
  • Identifying pupils and families who may need any extra support returning to school and what resources you will put in place to assist this
  • Clear procedures to ensure your school is continuing to safeguard and support your most vulnerable/hard to reach pupils

The Education Welfare Service (EWS) is available to provide schools with specialist, practical support in all attendance related matters and can be tailored to your school's bespoke requirements.
As EWS are able to provide an additional resource to schools, our qualified officers regularly undertake home visits, provide early help support and assessments and use their professional knowledge and experience to find creative ways to re-engage learners and reassure parents.

If you would like to explore how an Education Welfare Officer may be able to support your school in ensuring your action plan and attendance practices meet the current legislation and DfE guidance please do contact us: or call Michelle Fowler on 01905 844667.

Further information on Education Welfare services can be found on pages 34-39 of the  WCF Education-services-directory-2021-2022.
