A sport campaign called #60daysofsport has been officially launched from the County Cricket Club at New Road over the weekend.

Sporting heroes including four-time Paralympian, Clare Griffiths, Judith Hamer, London 2012 Paralympian and Jenny Nesbit (3k,5k,10k and cross country runner and winner of last year’s Worcester 10k) helped to promote the campaign alongside the Mayor and council officials.

Jude Hamer said: "I'm really excited about the 60 days of sport launch, having so many great sporting events in Worcestershire is very exciting for us and the county. I'm really looking forward to the support I know we'll receive during the Europeans from the people of Worcester."

The campaign, which looks to promote sport to both residents and businesses throughout the county, also has its own event calendar – which was officially launched by the Mayor of Worcester.

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Roger Knight, said: “The #60daysofsport campaign will turbo-charge Worcester’s growing reputation as a vibrant sporting city. We’re at the start of two incredible month of sporting action, with the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, the Worcester City Run, the Aviva Tour Ride, Worcester Warriors’ return to the Premiership and many more events. I’d like to encourage everyone to get involved in the excitement by using the hashtag #60daysofsport alongside #WorldClassWorcs, whether you’re a player or a supporter.”

Councillor Lucy Hodgson, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Localism and Communities said: "The #60daysofsport campaign looks to be a great event which is headlined with some world class sporting events taking place across our county. We've had the U19 Australia V England cricket match and we also have the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships coming to Worcester later this month too. Both of which are great news for the county."

"I would encourage everyone to take part in the events listed and wish both professional and amateur athletes all the best of luck in whatever event they take part in."

The event calendar, which is community focused highlights events taking place across the county. Residents from across Worcestershire will be able to log into the #60daysofsport website and find out what events are taking place near them. To access the event listing residents should go to www.visitworcestershire.org/60-days-of-sport

Mike Ashton, Chief Executive of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce said: “Worcestershire provides so much opportunity for getting involved in or watching sport with three premier league teams and a wealth of high quality training facilities as well as beautiful countryside for running, walking, cycling and rowing.  The Worcestershire Rapids are doing really well, the Worcester Warriors begin their exciting 2015/16 campaign in October and I look forward to welcoming the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships to Worcester at the end of the month. The #60daysofsport campaign encourages residents and visitors to engage in sport, exercise and get fit and showcases many of the sporting opportunities our county has to offer. I as someone who is very into sport of all forms would encourage everyone to get involved.”

Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire Director, Stephen Brewster, said “The #60DaysofSport Campaign is a great initiative to highlight the vast amount of sport and physical activity that is taking place across the county that the public cannot only take part in but also support. Our vision is to get everyone in Worcestershire physically active so having a campaign focussed purely on this is fantastic to inspire the county!”
