Kids Can Get Busy This Summer at The Hive

Published Thursday, 20th July 2017

The Hive will be buzzing with activity through the summer holidays with six weeks of free educational fun for children.

Every day activities will take place between 10am and 3pm, including a daily storytime at 11am and 2.45pm, colouring and origami.

On Thursdays children can learn how animals use their skills and instincts to survive and every hour there will be make and take crafts sessions inspired by the Animal Agents Summer Reading Challenge. These sessions cost £2.50 and booking is advisable.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event run by The Reading Agency in libraries across the country to encourage children from ages 4 to 12 to borrow and read six books of their choice before 23 September. Children can sign up at their local library to join the challenge and collect rewards along the way.

This year, the Reading Challenge has chosen the theme Animal Agents which The Hive has taken inspiration from for some of its children activities.

For children aged 8 to 12 who would like to learn how to make games, websites and animations, The Hive has introduced three Computing Coding drop-in taster sessions on Monday 31 July, Wednesday 9 August and Friday 18 August from 10am to 11.30am. The sessions teach children how to learn to build computing ideas using code.

The Canal & River Trust is hosting a day of activities, crafts and treasure trails around the library for families to take part in on Tuesday 22 August from 11am to 1pm. Trail blazers can also enjoy the new self-guided Hive Sustainability Trail.

Open Mic Nights are an opportunity for young people aged 12 to 19 to showcase their own music, dance or poetry. They happen on the last Friday of every month at The Hive. There are two taking place over the summer holidays on 28 July and 25 August from 6pm to 8pm.

For the grown-ups The Hive has a quarter of a million books to choose from, 12 miles of archives, exhibitions in the atrium and in the café area as well as offers at The Hive café. So you can take some time out from the hectic holidays to relax.

For baby to pre-school children, there are also regular weekly activities at The Hive including, Bounce and Rhyme for preschool children every Tuesday, Baby Bounce and Rhyme every Friday, Wacky Wednesday parent and child sessions and Baby Latte Worcester breastfeeding support every Friday.
