The Mystery of Shakespeare's Marriage

Published Tuesday, 21st February 2017

Take our romantic Tudor Tour and see if you can unravel the mystery of Shakespeare's marriage.

This Saturday, February 25, between 2pm and 3.30pm at The Hive, we are running a special tour with a Tudor romance flavour. As part of Love Worcester festival we helping people get a good insight into Shakespeare's marriage.

Here, in the archives is the marriage bond of William Shakespeare and associated entry in the Bishop's register, but a discrepancy hints at a mystery. We also have Shakespeare's grandfather's will here which we will have on display.

We'll also be showing visitors other 16thC items including pottery from the period found during digs in the county. We'll explain about the visit of Queen Elizabeth I to Worcester, and see the preparations in the City's records, and you can view illuminated documents of the period.

Paul Hudson, Outreach manager, said: "Shakespeare's marriage bond is just one of many Tudor items we have in our collections, and thought this period would be great for a behind the scenes tour. It is a fascinating period in history we have some amazing items in the collections here".

History tours at The Hive are very popular and sell out fast. Places need to be booked in advance and cost £6 per person.
