Have a green Christmas with a compost bin

With Christmas only a few weeks away, it is an ideal time to think about getting that perfect gift for your loved one.

It might not seem the obvious choice, but why not get that someone special a compost bin or food waste digester?  Keen gardener or not, even those with a little bit of outside space can still reap the rewards of owning a compost bin.  There's even a solution for people with no garden at all.

Alongside the traditional compost bins that take organic kitchen and garden waste, there are food waste digesters that can take cooked food waste.  The majority produce nutrition-rich compost which is ideal for feeding your garden and potted plants.

Cllr Anthony Blagg, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: "At Christmas we produce more food waste than at any other time of the year so why not compost your vegetable peelings?  The remnants of your New Year's Eve party will also be a welcome addition to your compost bin including the nut shells and cocktail sticks.

"Buying a compost bin not only produces lovely compost for your garden, it reduces the amount of waste that the County Council has to dispose of.  So it is not only good for the environment, but also the residents of Worcestershire, who can benefit from these savings being spent on other services within the County.

"Compost bins make a great Christmas present for green-fingered friends and family – the only downside is the amount of wrapping paper you have to use!  But this can always be recycled in your green bin afterwards."

And when the festivities are over you can add the natural home-made decorations like holly and ivy centre pieces (after removing the wire and other decorations).

Compost bins start at £9.50 plus £5 delivery. For information on the types and tips on how to get the best from your compost bin or food waste digester go to www.letwasteless.com. To order your bin visit www.getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444.
