Every year, one young person from Worcestershire is given the title Worcestershire's Young Poet Laureate. In this role, our Young Poet Laureate champions poetry as an art form with the aim of encouraging and inspiring other young people to write and perform poetry.
They are also mentored by a professional poet and given coaching on writing and performance.
The annual competition
The exciting competition runs annually and invites young people aged 8-18 years to put pen to paper and compete for the coveted title of being Worcestershire’s next Young Poet Laureate.
The competition has three entry age groups 8 to 11 years, 12 to 15 years and 16 to 18 years. Each year we run poetry workshops led by professional spoken word poets for young people in schools and public libraries.
Entrants are asked to submit two poems. One must focus on the competition subject theme and one can be on any subject you like. The theme for 2020 was ‘Identity’. The poems can be any length, and in any shape or form you like. Entry is free but limited to one entry per person. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges.
The panel of judges for 2020 included Birmingham Poet Laureate (2017-2018) Matt Windle, songwriter and performance coach Ade Holbrook, award-winning performance poet ‘Spoz’ and Sophie Green, Worcestershire's Young Poet Laureate for 2019.
