Worcestershire Archaeology is a Registered Archaeological Organisation, regulated by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. This means that we work to the highest standards: you can be sure that we have the expertise to deliver your project. Our staff have over 500 years combined professional experience. We are archaeological contractors undertaking a wide range of commercial, research and community projects within Worcestershire, the West Midlands and beyond. We work with property developers, infrastructure schemes, quarries, householders, local communities, churches and anyone else who requires expert archaeological advice.

We have specialist staff who can offer their expertise in finds and environmental archaeology and we are able to supply qualified geophysical survey teams on a sub-contract basis. A full illustration and design service can also be delivered by our highly-skilled Illustration team.

Environmental Services

Worcestershire Archaeology provides comprehensive specialist environmental services for commercial, research and public-funded projects. Our specialists have a proven track record of contributing to regional and national guidelines and research frameworks, and are active members of internationally recognised specialist groups (including the Quaternary Research Association and the Association for Environmental Archaeology).

Finds Services

Finds archaeology covers all aspects of finds study, including identification, dating, analysis and reporting for a variety of purposes. We provide specialist support and input to all types of archaeological work carried out by the Archive and Archaeology Service, and other organisations across a wide range of sites in the region, often in collaboration with specialists based elsewhere, and including research projects. Our specialists are active members of many specialist groups, including the Study Group for Roman Pottery and the Medieval Pottery Research Group.

We draw on a wide range of in-house expertise to produce:

  • advice on artefact recovery
  • identification and dating of all types of artefacts
  • assessment reports
  • full post-fieldwork analysis and reporting
  • development and maintenance of the on-line ceramic reference collection
  • teaching and outreach activities

Illustration Services

Our team of specialist illustrators provide a wide range of design and archaeological illustration skills for all aspects of the Service's work. From the outline planning stages of an evaluation or excavation, through field work, post-excavation analysis and into the publication of archaeological reports and monographs, the illustrators find themselves working as an integral part of the team.

Two of our illustrators have earned Full membership of the Association of Archaeological Illustrators and Surveyors, the international organisation which sets and maintains the standards of illustration within the profession. We are also members of the Association for Heritage Interpretation.

We offer:

  • highly detailed and accurate drawings of pottery and artefacts
  • digitised excavation plans and sections
  • digital mapping of past landscapes
  • archaeological reconstruction illustrations
  • heritage interpretation, including interpretation boards and signs
