Update on 22/09/2014: Open Market Review responses are no longer accepted.
The project team recently conducted an Open Market Review (OMR) to establish the current state of broadband infrastructure and to identify where any private sector investment is planned in the next three years.
Worcestershire County Council's Broadband Programme is working to extend better coverage of broadband across Worcestershire, beyond the reach of commercially-funded deployments.
In August 2013, Worcestershire County Council signed a £20 million deal to bring Superfast Broadband to nearly 55,000 rural homes and businesses. This immense engineering task includes ambitious targets so that by June 2016:
90% of business premises in Worcestershire will have the ability to access high-speed fibre Broadband
High-speed fibre Broadband will be available to at least 90% of Worcestershire residents.
Everyone in the county will have access to broadband speeds of at least 2Mbps.
Worcestershire County Council have recently secured additional public funding to further extend better broadband across Worcestershire with the aim of increasing coverage to 95% by the end of 2017. In order to efficiently deploy this additional funding, we intend to either call-off additional coverage from the existing BT contract, and/or procure a separate contract(s).
As part of this new process, we are now commencing an Open Market Review (OMR) to establish existing and planned (next 3 years) commercial coverage of broadband services in Worcestershire by all existing, and any prospective, broadband infrastructure providers. We intend to use the information gathered as part of the OMR to define the Intervention Areas to be targeted for additional coverage. Once we have defined these Intervention Areas from the OMR Review, we will be conducting a State Aid public consultation for 1 calendar month on our proposed Intervention Areas.
The resulting additional coverage will be delivered in parallel with our current Superfast Worcestershire programme.
