Leapgate Old Railway Line

Leapgate Walkers, cyclists and horse riders are welcome along this two-mile section of disused railway line. It was the old branch line from Stourport to Hartlebury. Part sandstone cutting, the site also includes a former quarry, which is now full of graceful white-barked Silver Birch trees. Their seeds are produced in huge numbers, and the trees grow fairly quickly, so they are very common and a mixed blessing to conservationists.

If you stood at one of the bridges you would wait a very long time for a train, but not long at all to see rabbits from the numerous warrens, or maybe a hare bounding across the surrounding fields. Look up as you pass under the old bridges, and you may see a Kestrel or a Wren nesting among the Ivy that clads the walls and nearby trees.

Take in the fine views as you go over the viaduct over the River Stour to the valley below. You can stand above the trees for a real birds eye view of the surrounding countryside. Pass ancient laid hedges and water meadows as you make your way along the line. There are several links with other footpaths from the main track.

The name Leapgate derives from the gates that were used to manage stock in deer parks, such as in the nearby Hartlebury Castle.
