Looked After Children

Most children who are looked after stay with foster families, carers who have been approved and trained by us to look after children in their own home. For other children staying in a residential children's home is the preferred option.
While children are being looked after we will make sure that they have regular contact with people who they want to see and who are important to them.
Most children return to live at home later. However, if it is not safe, or in the child's best interests to do so, we will arrange a suitable long term or permanent place for the child to live.

Being Looked After - A Guide for Children and Young People
This booklet is for children and young people who are being looked after by Children's Services. It tells you what you can expect and answers some of the basic questions you may have. We have tried to keep it simple and straightforward.

Planning for Children and Young People Looked After by Children's Services
Children and young people may sometimes need to be cared for by Children's Services, perhaps at a time of family crisis. Usually this is with the agreement of parents but sometimes a court requires this in a child's interests. A young person who is 16 years old can themselves ask to be cared for.
These booklets explain what Children's Services do when a young person is being looked after away from home, for whatever reason.
