200 years ago an Act to Abolish slavery in the British Empire was passed.

Although this was not the end of slavery and subsequent acts needed to be passed, this year is being marked as an opportunity to reflect on slave trade and the ramifications.

Were your ancestors slaves? What does this year’s commemorations mean to you?

Worcester Herald, 25 April 1807

This is how Worcestershire people found out about the passing of the Act in the Worcester Herald, available to view at Worcestershire History Centre.  The debates were reported in the pages of the newspaper in the preceding months and news from Jamaica was reported afterwards too.

You may have your own celebrations that mean a lot to you. Perhaps a special birthday, wedding anniversary or a christening.
