Cost of Certificates

From the Registrar who registered the birth, death or marriage:

Standard Certificate	£3.50
Short Birth Certificate	£3.50

(One short certificate is issued free of charge at the time of registering the birth)

Certificates are available from the Registrar only at the time of registration or shortly afterwards. Once a register is filled it is passed to the Superintendent Registrar and certificates are no longer available from the Registrar

From the Superintendent Registrar:

Standard Certificate	£7.00
Short Birth Certificate	£5.50

From the Clergyman, Authorised Person, Secretary (for Marriages) of a Synagogue or Registering Officer of the Society of Friends who registered the marriage:

Standard Marriage Certificate at the time of marriage	Costs variable depending on the source of certificate
subsequently	Costs variable depending on the source of certificate

Applications in person from the General Register Office, Office for National Statistics, Family Records Centre, Myddelton Street, London, EC1R 1UW

Postal Applications from the General Register Office, PO Box 2, Southport, PR8 2JD. Payment by sterling cheque made payable to ONS, or by quoting credit/debit card details.

Applications by fax to 01704550013, or by telephone 0870 243 7788, quoting credit/debit card details. Lines are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.

A secure, on-line ordering service is located at www.gro.gov.uk. Certificates can be ordered when exact details are given for events after 1900 or where a GRO reference is provided.

Priority Certificate of Birth, (Full or Short), Death or Marriage

if applied for by post, phone or fax and a GRO reference is provided	£24.50

Standard Cerificate of Adoption

if applied for in person at the Family Records Centre or on-line with a GRO reference	£7.00
if applied for by post, phone or fax and a GRO reference is provided	£8.50
if applied for by post, phone, fax or online (without a GRO reference)	£11.50

Short Certificate of Adoption

if applied for in person at the Family Records Centre or on-line with a GRO reference	£5.00

if applied for by post and information from ONS Index* is supplied	£7.00

Priority Certificate for Adoption

If applied for in person at the FRC or on-line with a GRO reference, full birth	£23.00
if applied for in person at the FRC or on-line with a GRO reference, short birth	£21.50
if applied for by post or fax and GRI reference is given, full birth	£24.50
if applied for by post or fax and GRI reference is given, short birth	£23.00
if applied for by post, phone, fax or on-line (without a GRO reference) full birth	£27.50
if applied for by post, phone, fax or on-line (without a GRO reference) full birth	£26.00

*Prior to 1993, information from the GRPO Index is of no relevance when application is made other than to the General Register Office

The Service aims to respond to requests for copy certificates - by post, personal callers and telephone where credit card details are provided - within two working days (Target 90%)

The Service aims to respond to all requests for copy certificates for family tree research within five working days (Target 90%)
