What is Council Tax ?

Council Tax is a locally set tax that is payable on all domestic properties.

In most cases there will be one bill per property, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it is owned or rented.

It is collected to help pay for local services such as schools, roads, libraries, police, fire, refuse collection and many other local services.

The amount of Council Tax that you pay depends on how many people live in your home and your home's Council Tax valuation band.

  • The what you pay pages show more information on how your Council Tax is calculated
  • The valuation pages will tell you more about how your home's valuation band was decided.

The district performance and summary leaflet included with your Council Tax demand notice includes more information on how the Council Tax is spent.
